Skip to Main Content Home View Your Submissions Coffee House Press Coffee House Press There are presently no open calls for submissions. Coffee House Press publishes emerging and midcareer authors. Nearly all CHP authors have had works published in literary magazines or other publications (a list of prior publications can strengthen your submission). Although prior publications are important, they are not a requirement; part of our mission is to present promising debut authors alongside those who have been previously published. Recent Coffee House Press titles include Valeria Luiselli's Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in 40 Questions, Gabe Habash's Stephen Florida, Bao Phi's Thousand Star Hotel , and Barbara Browning's The Gift . Since Coffee House Press produces relatively few titles each year, our books reflect the individual tastes of our small staff. CHP looks for writing that takes risks in terms of form and content and that pushes the boundaries of what literature is, what it can do, and who it belongs to. CHP currently publishes sixteen to eighteen trade titles annually. We highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with our books to see if your work and our list are compatible. Most independent bookstores and many libraries carry our titles. You can also browse through our online catalog (coffeehousepress.org/collections/shop). Submission Guidelines: 1. We will not be accepting submissions this fall. Our next open reading period is tentatively planned for the spring of 2020. During our open reading periods, we will cap the number of submissions we accept at 300, so if you plan to send us work, please do so early. Please check back for more information on what we'll be looking for and what genres we will be accepting. 2. Extraneous materials (i.e., marketing proposals, promotional materials, sample layouts, praise sheets for previous titles) are not necessary and will not aid your submission's chances of acceptance. 3. Please do not submit more than one work per reading period. Additional submissions will not be considered. 4. All submissions should include page numbers on every page and be sent as a .doc or .pdf. 5. There are no specific length requirements for submissions, although it should be noted that Coffee House Press does not publish chapbooks, single poems, single essays, or single short stories. CHP is especially interested in reviewing novels, book-length essays, and essay collections. 6. Submissions sent as email attachments will not be considered. 7. The review process for full-length manuscripts can take up to 4–6 months, or longer in some instances. Manuscripts that seem appropriate for CHP are given several careful reads, and the final decision rests with our publisher.
